Choosing the right type of anti-ligature window protector isn’t just about safety, it’s about suitability. Where the unit is positioned in relation to the window can make a big difference to the look, feel, and function of a room, especially in mental health, SEN, or secure care settings.

At Contour, we offer two core fitting styles for internal window protection:

  • Inset, where the unit sits inside the window reveal
  • Surface-mounted, where the unit is fitted directly onto the internal wall around the window

So how do you decide which is the right choice?

Let’s break it down.

What's the Difference?

The main difference between the two fitting types is where the protector sits in relation to the window:

  • Inset units are fixed into the sides of the reveal. They’re flush with the surrounding wall and frame the window more discreetly.
  • Surface-mounted units are installed over the front of the window, fixing into the wall surrounding it. This makes them more prominent but potentially quicker to install in some scenarios.

Functionally, both perform the same task:

  • Reducing ligature risk
  • Preventing window damage
  • Providing optional airflow and light control
  • Helping to keep the room in use during incidents or window damage.

When to Choose an Inset Window Protector

An inset protector is often the best choice when:

  • The window reveal is deep or structurally sound enough to fix into
  • A lower profile appearance is preferred
  • You’re working in a refurbishment or retrofit project where the original wall finish is being retained
  • You want a more integrated aesthetic, or you’re working in a room where space is tight

Inset protectors are particularly effective in bedrooms or therapy rooms where a clean, minimal environment supports calm and recovery. Their flush fit helps reduce perceived obstructions in the space, contributing to a more therapeutic feel.

When to Choose a Surface-mounted Window Protector

A surface-mounted protector may be more suitable when:

  • The reveal is shallow, damaged or uneven
  • You need a faster installation, such as during a room change or after an incident
  • You’re working to a tight budget and need a simpler fit
  • You want to keep a protector in stock for rapid-response scenarios

Surface-mounted protectors don’t require a deep reveal to fix into, so they’re often chosen for temporary installation or where the window structure won’t support an inset unit. They’re also easier to install in varied building types, from older hospitals to newer modular constructions.

Do Both Options Have the Same Features?

Yes - whether you choose inset or surface-mounted, you’ll still benefit from:

  • A 2mm Zintec or Magnelis steel frame with integrated IP3X rated grille
  • An 8mm thick Class 1 fire-rated polycarbonate vision panel
  • The option to add a dial-operated vent for airflow
  • The option to add a fire-rated enclosed blind for privacy and light control
  • Bespoke sizing to fit each window
  • Easy access for cleaning or maintenance via Contour Secure cam locks

Tailored Advice for Safer Spaces

Contour offers free of charge site surveys, giving you expert guidance on which solution best suits your space. Our team will assess the existing window structure, intended room use, and safety requirements before making a recommendation.

If aesthetics are a concern, such as in patient bedrooms, therapy spaces, or visitor areas, the window protector frame can be powder coated to suit the environment. As standard, Contour window protectors are finished in RAL 9003 white with BioCote® anti-microbial protection, promoting hygiene in healthcare settings. We also offer RAL 7013 grey as a standard alternative, which does not include BioCote®. A wide range of other RAL colours are available on request, subject to availability and potential surcharge, helping you maintain design continuity without compromising on safety.
