Anti-ligature External Window Protector

Discreet, durable window protection for external glazing at risk of damage or tampering

Contour’s external window protectors offer a reliable, retrofittable safety solution. Designed to shield glazing from vandalism, accidental damage or general wear and tear, these surface-mounted units are fixed to the building’s exterior environments where the public or service users have unsupervised access to outdoor areas.

Fitted to the external façade of a building, the unit provides an additional layer of protection for high-risk or high-value windows without needing to replace existing glazing.

Each one is manufactured to bespoke dimensions, making it suitable for a wide range of window types across public sector, healthcare, residential and community settings.

Whether you’re managing a public-facing building, a secure facility or a private care environment, Contour’s External Window Protector helps reduce maintenance costs and prevent disruption by safeguarding glazing before damage occurs.

Key Features

Each unit is constructed from a robust 2mm Magnelis steel frame, powder coated for additional protection and a clean, professional finish. The main panel includes a high-strength, clear, 8mm thick polycarbonate vision panel to maintain light transmission and visibility while shielding the underlying glass. This high-strength combination offers excellent impact resistance, making it ideal for safeguarding glazing in secure outdoor-facing environments.

Designed as a standalone product, the external protector can be made with frosted or mirrored polycarbonate to preserve privacy, especially for windows overlooking sensitive outdoor areas or where service users need shielding from public view.

The entire assembly is manufactured to order to bespoke measurements, ensuring a precise fit and secure finish for each individual window regardless of the window size or style. This tailored approach allows for seamless integration across various building types, including retrofitting projects. Fixings are tamper-resistant, and the panel design allows for easy maintenance without compromising performance.

Where Can External Window Protectors Be Used?

Unlike internal window protectors, external versions are not focused on anti-ligature safety from inside a room – instead, they’re designed to protect glazing from external risk. This makes them particularly well suited to:

  • Mental health courtyards, where expensive anti-ligature windows need added protection from deliberate impact or vandalism
  • Public-facing buildings such as libraries, town halls, sports centres or community hubs, where standard glazing could be at risk from passers-by
  • Children’s homes, playgrounds and education settings, where a change in use increases the likelihood of window breakage
  • Private residential units or secure care homes, especially where shared outdoor spaces are accessed unsupervised

While rare in standard NHS mental health estates, external protectors are ideal for more flexible or mixed-use sites where the risk profile for outdoor areas has changed but existing glazing is still fit for purpose.

Robust Construction: Crafted from 2mm thick Magnelis steel frame, the window protector ensures durability and resilience against impacts, making it ideal for high-security settings.
Impact-resistant Vision Panel: 8mm thick polycarbonate vision panel provides exceptional strength while offering flexibility to absorb impacts, surpassing the standards of traditional riot shields.
Replaceable Window: Easily replace damaged polycarbonate vision panel without replacing the entire frame, ensuring cost-effectiveness and convenience.
Anti-microbial Coating: Powder coated in RAL 9003 white with BioCote® anti-microbial protection, the frame enhances hygiene and cleanliness in sensitive environments.
Tamper-resistant Fixing: Securely fitted using internal fixings around the perimeter of the unit, making it highly tamper-resistant once installed. This ensures long-term durability and safety without the need for access panels, locks, or keys - ideal for unsupervised or publicly accessible outdoor settings.
Customisable Grilles: IP3X rated grilles punched directly into the steel frame, preventing the passage of objects larger than 2.5mm while maintaining ventilation. Grille placement can be tailored to align with the underlying window layout, whether that’s a traditional sash window or a mixed-opening style, offering flexibility without compromising safety.

FAQs

What size do they come in?

Due to the modular design and bespoke manufacture, we are able to tailor our design to meet the needs of the building. As a rule something like a 1200 x 1500 would be a single module construction and 4000 x 2000 would be made from multiple panels to span the area required.

Can I replace the vision panel?

If the vision panel is damaged then it can be easily swapped out without needing to replace the whole frame.

How do I order one?

Contour offers free of charge site surveys so please get in touch to book a member of our surveying team in to come and measure them up for you.

Can I order a bespoke colour to match our décor?

Other RAL colours are available but may incur a surcharge. Get in touch with a member of our team to discuss your requirements.
