Anti-ligature Surface Mounted Window Guard
Secure your environment safely, quickly, and affordably with Contour’s anti-ligature window guard. Designed as a robust secondary glazing solution, it helps reduce the risk of self-harm, prevent damage to glazing and window fixtures, and support safer, more manageable spaces for both staff and service users.
Mounted directly onto the interior wall surface, this version is ideal for retrofitting where a recessed (inset) installation isn’t suitable. Whether adapting a space for a service user with more complex or volatile behaviours, responding to safeguarding needs, or protecting existing windows from impact, this window protector provides a practical and efficient solution.
With optional integrated features such as a dial-operated ventilation system or enclosed blind for privacy and light control, this protector combines safety with day-to-day usability. It can be made to bespoke dimensions, is quick to install, and maintains visibility and natural light while supporting secure, dignified environments.
Key Features of Anti-ligature Window Guards
Each anti-ligature window protector is constructed with a robust 2mm Zintec or Magnelis steel frame and grille, offering strength and resilience in challenging environments. The anti-ligature grille is IP3X rated and punched directly into the steel frame to prevent the passage of items larger than 2.5mm, while still supporting effective airflow. The configuration can be tailored to suit the window behind, whether it's a traditional sash, casement, or fixed pane.
An 8mm polycarbonate vision panel provides excellent impact resistance while allowing natural light to pass through, helping to maintain a therapeutic and open feel within the room.
This version is designed to sit flush with the window frame being surface mounted onto the internal wall, making it ideal where window reveals are too narrow or inconsistent for an inset fit. It can be installed quickly and efficiently, with internal fixings for added security. All window guards are manufactured to bespoke sizes for a precise, professional finish, even across uneven or non-standard walls.
Contour Secure compression cam locks are fitted as standard, allowing authorised staff to open the unit for cleaning or access to the window behind, while remaining tamper-resistant to protect vulnerable occupants. The locks feature a visual indicator so staff can instantly confirm when the unit is secured.
Optional Integrated Ventilation Grille
-
For additional safety and comfort, an optional anti-ligature dial-operated vent can be added. This allows airflow from an open external window to be regulated from within the room, helping maintain safe air circulation without compromising security or increasing ligature risk.
Optional Integrated Blind
-
An enclosed, fire-rated blind system is also available as an optional extra. Discreetly integrated between the existing window and the protector and operated by an external anti-ligature dial, it enables service users to control light levels independently. Unlike curtains or other fabric coverings, the blind cannot be pulled down or removed, reducing disruption to sleep and behaviour. Available in a range of colours, patterns, and blackout or standard finishes, the blind supports both safety and occupant comfort while maintaining a clean, tamper-resistant appearance.
-
Where greater privacy is required, a frosted or mirrored polycarbonate vision panel can be specified, allowing light in while obscuring visibility into or out of the space. All units are finished in RAL 9003 white with BioCote® anti-microbial protection as standard, with RAL 7016 grey also available, and further colours on request.
Window Guard Adaptability
- Each window guard is manufactured to bespoke dimensions to ensure a precision fit across a wide range of window styles and building types, including settings where window replacement isn’t possible, such as listed properties.
This combination of strength, flexibility, and user-focused features makes the window protector a practical and effective solution for safety-critical environments.
In addition to their safety and performance benefits, Contour anti ligature window protectors offer excellent adaptability to suit a wide range of window types and building conditions. They can be installed either as inset units within the window reveal or surface mounted, depending on the needs of the space. For more ornate or uneven reveals, often found in older or listed buildings, the design can be mounted using a timber subframe or a bespoke chamfered metal framework. This flexibility ensures a precise fit and a clean finish, regardless of the substrate or building age, while maintaining all key safety and anti-ligature features.
Where Can Anti-ligature Window Protectors be Used?
Contour’s surface mounted window protectors are suitable for a wide range of high-risk settings where safety, visibility, and protection of glazing are essential. They are especially useful in environments where window reveals are too shallow or inconsistent for an inset fit.
Typical applications include:
• Mental health inpatient wards
• Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU)

FAQs
How do I open the window to let fresh air in?
There are two options depending on your setup. The vision panel is secured using Contour Secure’s tamper-resistant compression cam locks, operated with a dedicated key. Once unlocked, the panel can be fully removed to access the existing window - ideal for ventilation or cleaning.
Alternatively, if the optional integrated vent is included, the external window can remain open, and airflow into the room can be safely regulated using the anti-ligature dial, without the need to remove the panel.
What sizes are available?
Each unit is made to measure, tailored to the exact dimensions of your window reveal. As a guide, smaller sizes (e.g. 1200mm x 1500mm) are typically constructed as a single door, while larger areas (e.g. 4000mm x 2000mm) are manufactured as a modular system made up of multiple panels.
Can the vision panel be replaced?
Yes. In the unlikely event that the polycarbonate vision panel becomes damaged, it can be easily replaced without removing the entire frame, minimising cost, time, and disruption.
How do I place an order?
Contour offers free, no-obligation site surveys. Simply contact our team to arrange a visit from one of our experienced surveyors who will assess your windows and take all necessary measurements.
Can I order a specific colour to match our décor?
Window protectors are supplied as standard in RAL 9003 white with BioCote® anti-microbial protection. We also offer RAL 7014 grey as a second standard colour (note: this version does not include BioCote®). Other RAL colours are available on request and may incur a surcharge - please contact our team to discuss your requirements.
