FAQs

Need More Information?

If you’re new to anti-ligature window protection, or you're unsure which solution best fits your space, our FAQs can help clarify features, functionality, and options available.

What is an anti-ligature window protector?

It’s a secure, steel-framed secondary glazing unit fitted over or around an existing window to help reduce ligature risk, protect glazing, and maintain natural light and visibility in high-risk environments.

What’s the difference between surface-mounted, inset, and external window protectors?

  • Surface-mounted protectors are fixed to the wall around the window reveal and are for shallow window reveals when fixing internally isn't available.

  • Inset protectors are fitted within the window reveal itself,  offering hidden fixings for more discreet integration.

  • External protectors are mounted outside the building to protect outward-facing windows. Ideal for internal courtyards where vandalism could occur or to prevent contraband being passed in through the window.

Can the window still be opened?

Yes. The vision panel can be removed via secure locks, giving full access to the original window for cleaning, ventilation, or maintenance.

What are the optional extras?

You can add:

  • A controllable vent, which lets airflow from an open window be adjusted safely using an anti-ligature dial.

  • An integrated blind housed between the window and protector, also controlled via a tamper-proof dial, offering privacy without ligature risks.

Are they suitable for listed or heritage buildings?

Yes. Our window protectors can be installed using custom frameworks to suit ornate or uneven reveals, allowing safety upgrades without altering the original structure.

Are they custom-made?

Every protector is made to order to fit the exact window dimensions and room layout, ensuring a precise fit and optimal performance.

Do the protectors comply with NHS safety standards?

Yes. Contour’s designs align with key NHS guidance including HTM standards for mental health environments and include features to support infection control protocols such as BioCote® anti-microbial coating.
