Since 2006 Contour has enabled the NHS to potentially save over £250 million*

We’ve done this by developing the revolutionary DeepCleanTM range of LST radiators and guards. DeepClean’s unique patented drop down front access panel and quick release locks, allows one cleaner to easily access every surface of the radiator guard without support from an estates department. This significantly improves cleaning efficiencies, raises hygiene standards and helps reduce overheads.

The problem with traditional LST radiator guards

Traditional LST radiator guard designs are fixed boxes and are difficult to access, with internal cleaning involving complete disassembly. Many of these traditional radiator guards are heavy and awkward to lift, with cleaning staff requiring the assistance of several maintenance personnel. As a result the whole process of cleaning a radiator casing is slow and costly.

One traditional guard alone can take up to 30 minutes to disassemble, remove, clean, reassemble and refit.

The DeepClean Solution

The DeepClean LST radiator from Contour is made from a robust one-piece construction, dramatically reducing installation time and in contrast to a traditional guard, it is possible for a cleaning operative to clean the product internally and on their own.

A patented, quick release, full access hinged door (UK Patent No: 2 410 544), allows the front of the casing to lie flat on the floor. The door can then be stood upon if necessary while cleaning, without resulting in any structural damage. The open-hinge design also facilitates complete door removal if required.

By incorporating unique rotary valve fittings as additional options, this design also allows the radiator to be lowered down to floor level. Cleaning is now possible on the top, front, sides and back of the radiator, as well as the wall around and behind the radiator.

The Biocote® silver-based anti-microbial coating incorporated as standard in to the paint work of Contour guards, reduces the risk of bacteria growing on the casing in an additional step towards preventing the spread of hospital acquired infections.

The business case for specifying Contour

This indicates the level of savings in cleaning budgets that could be made for a hospital replacing 150 old style LST units with new DeepClean LST radiators or guards, taking into account the NHS cleaning frequency guidelines* and the National Living Wage, that came into operation on 1st April 2016.

In this example, replacing traditional LST units with DeepClean LST radiators or guards could save £47,174.40 in cleaning costs by the end of year 1.

*NHS cleaning guidelines state radiators should be cleaned on a weekly basis and that radiator covers should be removed as part of a ‘damp-dusting’ cleaning regime. These specifications can be found in the The National Specifications for cleanliness in the NHS and The Revised Healthcare Cleaning Manual created by the NHS national patient safety agency.

Importantly, the innovative design of our DeepClean LST radiators & guards mean cleaning standards can be significantly improved and the risk of cross contamination dramatically reduced, thereby assisting in the reduction of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs). Consequently this will provide greater savings and improved efficiencies within the property, as lower rates of HAIs free-up beds.
